This is the shorter carbine version of the British Model 1853 Enfield rifle musket was one of the best firearms of the time and was sought after by both US Federal and Confederate soldiers and was only second to the Springfield rifle musket.

The Union and the Confederate armies both had arms agents working in Europe trying to buy up as many as possible of the best weapons in Europe and the British 1853 Enfield was one of the best. The rebels best arms agent was Caleb Huse who beat the Federal arms buyers to the Enfield's. Caleb had even managed to secure a deal to buy all the Enfield's they could make and it was only because they ran out of money to pay for them all which let the Union federal arms buyer make deal.

By the end of the American Civil War (ACW) the union had managed to acquire 500,000 1853 rifle muskets and the south had managed only 400,000 rifle muskets.

The British Enfield 1853 rifle musket was a .577 calibre rifle musket so it accepted the standard Federal regulation .58 calibre ammunition as the Springfield but was 2 inches shorter than the Springfield.
